Twenty-Two

“Devon’s got a mean uppercut!” Jayden laughed as he settled onto the couch, lying on his back and resting his head on the puffy armrest.

“Let me get some ice.” I moved from the TV area to the drink bar at the far end of the room. An ice bucket sat atop the small counter near the vast selection of alcoholic beverages.

Devon followed me, keeping an eye on Jayden. “He speaks strangely.”

My turn to laugh. I pulled out the plastic bag holding the ice and dumped some of it back into the container. “All humans do. At least until you get used to their slang.”

“Pizza okay?” Jayden yelled.

I looked over and saw only his arm up, holding the phone, because the back of the couch hid the rest of him. “Order many, please.”

“Pizza?” Devon said.

“It is food to eat. It will come quickly.” I twisted the bag to prevent the ice from spilling out and wove part of it through to knot it. “This is ice. It is cold. Helps the pain on Jayden’s face go away.”

“I am sorry, Trinity. I was only protecting—”

“It’s okay.”

“I did not realize your Jayden was human. I figured—I thought— It was surprising. I am sorry.”

“It is very strange here, Devon. Please, do not worry. You can trust my Jayden. August does.”

I hustled back to Jayden and sat before him on the short table in front of the couch. He hung up the phone and tossed it to the end of the couch.

“Come here.” I reached for him to put the bag of ice on his face. Instead, he grabbed my wrist and guided me forward.

I slid off the table and to my knees. “Oh.”

His finger curled around the nape of my neck and eased me closer. Soft lips met mine, and he let out a little sigh.

“I’m so glad you’re safe.” He touched one more kiss to my lips, then my cheek, and gently eased back.

“Devon helped me get to you.” I slid my fingers through Jayden’s soft hair and let his scent curl around me. “Here, put this ice on your face. It is quite red.”

Devon paced near the door.

I leaned to the side and snatched the phone. “Devon, would you like to speak with Paige?”

“I thought you said she was with August.” Devon turned a circle in the big hotel room. “I would very much like to speak with her.”

Jayden winced as he lay back and closed his eyes.

“Can you hold this?” I guided Jayden’s hand to the ice pack. “I will call the number for August, and he can allow Paige to speak to Devon.”

He grabbed the bag of ice, and I sat back on the table as I dialed.

“Hello?” August answered on the first ring.

“August. This is Trinity calling you.”

“Holy snake spit, Trin. What happened to you?”

“I am okay. Devon is with me. He would very much like to speak with Paige.”

“Let me go into the main room to get her. Whatever was in the dart that rendered me unconscious was powerful.
